Lynn,
I hadn't thought too much as TC's books being literary or not. Either way, I am interested in what he writes, tho not all of his library of books/stories-- subject matter-- sticks, as in personal taste or not.
This MB takes on a life of it's own, apart from his writings.
I am glad he suggested to me this MB smile.gif

finally back on the right side of the road riding my bike...what joy...been a long time since I last rode...reading so many Cormac McCarthy books lately has me in a blue funk...looking forward to the piece coming up (thanks for alerting us, Mimi) from TC Boyle...he is great at tackling dark themes with a bit of humor so you don't feel so depressed...bring it on...have a nice day. smile.gif

On The Road is about "IT". No plot line needed when his painting of life in America was written six years before anyone but Allen Ginsburg could see its worth. The style held classic literary approaches while at the same time hitting you like a beboppers trumpet when the music is cooking. The impact on American culture this one tome has accomplished is (IMO) far greater than anything the beatles, TV or even LSD had. Jack once thought he saw himself as an angel who crashed to earth from heaven. I saw him do it after he was dead.

The plotline issue seems to be giving the screenwriters trouble.....since Coppola snagged the book rights. I just know I will probably hate what they do to the book. I pray not another "its cool daddy-o" with jazz in the the background. I believe a good device for the film should be to incorporate all the humor. The chapters of jack in Marin City are some of the drop dead funniest ever written.
